UK Printed Passport & Visa Photos

Paper passport applications need two identical printed photos that meet HM Passport Office’s rules. We take yours against the right background, check it against those rules and print it on photographic paper.

Pop into our Whitechapel shop: no appointment needed. We take your photo, check it with you and print it while you wait.

  • 35 mm wide × 45 mm high: the standard UK size, not cut down from a larger photo
  • Head 29–34 mm from chin to crown (the top of your head, not your hair)
  • Plain cream or light grey background
  • Plain expression, mouth closed and eyes open
  • Facing forwards and looking straight at the camera
  • No shadows on your face or behind you
  • Taken in the last month; no sunglasses or tinted lenses

Applying online

UK Digital Passport Photo Code

Applying or renewing online at GOV.UK? Instead of uploading a photo yourself, you can use a digital photo code. It’s a short code that links to a secure digital copy of the photo we take.

When the online application asks for your photo, choose to use a code and type it in. Your photo appears on screen for you to check, and it’s attached to your application when you submit. GOV.UK says shop photos are more likely to be accepted than ones taken at home.

We give you your code on a printed slip when we take your photo, with printed photos too if you’ve ordered them.

  • At least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall
  • Between 50 KB and 10 MB
  • A JPEG in colour, with no filters or editing
  • Plain light background with no shadows and nobody else in the shot

Baby & Children’s Passport Photos

Every child needs their own passport, and their own photo. We’re patient with little ones, and we take as many shots as it needs to get one that’s accepted. The rules are a little more relaxed for young children.

Pop into our Whitechapel shop: no appointment needed. We take your photo, check it with you and print it while you wait.

  • Under 6: they don’t have to look straight at the camera or keep a plain expression
  • Under 1: their eyes don’t have to be open
  • You can support a baby’s head, as long as your hand doesn’t show
  • Your child must be alone in the photo: no toys or dummies
  • Babies can lie on a plain light sheet and be photographed from above
