CineStill 400D 35mm Colour Negative Film
CineStill 400D is a versatile ISO 400 daylight-balanced colour negative film designed for photographers who want a distinctive cinematic look with plenty of flexibility. It produces a soft colour palette, natural saturation, warm skin tones and fine grain, while offering wide exposure latitude for changing lighting conditions.
Rated at ISO 400, it is suitable for daylight, overcast weather, portraits, street photography, travel and studio work. CineStill states that 400D can also be exposed between EI 200 and 800 with normal processing, or push-processed up to EI 3200, making it especially useful when lighting conditions are unpredictable. The 35mm cartridges are DX-coded and the film is designed for standard C-41 processing.

Questions about this product
Why Choose CineStill 400D?
Choose CineStill 400D if you want an all-round colour film with a more distinctive cinematic character than many conventional consumer films. Its ISO 400 speed is fast enough for general handheld photography while still providing fine grain and good detail. The wide exposure latitude makes it especially forgiving when moving between sunlight, shade, overcast conditions and indoor environments. Another major advantage is its flexibility. You can shoot it around EI 200–800 without changing normal processing, or push it further when you need additional speed. CineStill also notes that bright, overexposed highlights can show halation, adding a characteristic glowing effect that many photographers deliberately choose the film for.
Best Use For
Street Photography: ISO 400 provides a useful balance between speed and image quality for changing city light. Portrait Photography: Warm, natural skin tones and softer colour rendering make it particularly attractive for people photography. Travel Photography: A strong choice when you want to carry one film for bright daylight, shade and changing weather. Lifestyle & Documentary: The flexible exposure range is useful when you cannot control the lighting or repeat a moment. Weddings & Events: Suitable for natural-light portraits, outdoor ceremonies and documentary-style event photography. Golden Hour: Warm evening light works particularly well with the film’s natural colour character. Urban Night & Neon Photography: When pushed, 400D can be useful for lower-light environments, while bright highlights may produce distinctive halation. Studio Photography: Its daylight balance makes it suitable for daylight-balanced continuous lighting or flash.
Shooting Tips for CineStill 400D
Start at ISO 400. This is the film’s base sensitivity and a good starting point for balanced results. Try EI 200 for brighter, softer negatives. CineStill specifies that the film can be exposed at EI 200 without requiring pull processing. Use EI 800 when you need more speed. It can also be exposed at EI 800 with normal processing, giving useful flexibility in lower light. Push it for low light. When necessary, 400D can be push-processed as far as EI 3200, although grain, contrast and colour character will change as you push further. Watch bright highlights. Strong lights, reflections and overexposed highlights can create the characteristic CineStill halation glow. Use this creatively rather than expecting completely neutral highlight rendering. Take advantage of DX coding. Compatible point-and-shoot and automatic 35mm cameras can recognise the film speed automatically. Use C-41 processing. CineStill 400D is specifically designed for standard colour negative C-41 development, so it can be processed by conventional colour film labs
