HARMAN Phoenix II 35mm Colour Negative Film

HARMAN Phoenix II is a second-generation ISO 200 colour negative film designed for photographers who want distinctive analogue colour with more refined results than the original Phoenix.

Available as a 35mm 36-exposure film, Phoenix II is DX-coded at ISO 200 and is designed for standard C-41 colour negative processing. HARMAN recommends using it between approximately EI 100 and EI 200, depending on the lighting and scene.

Phoenix II has improved colour reproduction, finer grain, better sharpness, more controlled contrast and improved highlight and shadow retention compared with the original Phoenix. It still maintains an experimental personality, including the possibility of halation around bright highlights and unusual colour rendering.

It is an excellent choice for street photography, travel, portraits, landscapes and creative analogue projects.

Questions about this product

Why Choose HARMAN Phoenix II?

Choose HARMAN Phoenix II if you want a colour film that feels different from conventional mainstream film stocks while still being easier to use than the original HARMAN Phoenix. Phoenix II was completely reformulated, with improvements to grain, sharpness, contrast, colour reproduction and exposure latitude. This makes it more predictable while retaining the experimental character that makes Phoenix interesting. It is particularly appealing to photographers who enjoy seeing the film stock influence the final photograph. Depending on the subject, lighting, exposure and scanning method, Phoenix II can produce unusual colour, strong analogue character and occasional halation around bright light sources. It is also a good film for photographers who want to experiment without needing specialist development, as it uses normal C-41 processing.

Shooting Tips for HARMAN Phoenix II

Start at ISO 200. This is the DX-coded box speed and the simplest starting point. Try EI 100, 125 or 160. HARMAN recommends the film generally between EI 100 and 200, and slightly more exposure may work particularly well in some scenes. Meter carefully. Phoenix II has improved exposure latitude compared with the original Phoenix, but accurate exposure still gives the best results. Meter for the mid-tones. This is particularly useful when photographing scenes with both bright highlights and deep shadows. Bracket important photographs. If the scene is difficult, try several exposures to see which interpretation you prefer. Use good daylight when possible. Phoenix II generally performs especially well outdoors. Try a UV filter on very bright days. This can help improve colour and clarity in strong daylight. Expect some halation. Bright windows, reflections, headlights and other intense highlights can produce glowing effects around them. Do not expect completely conventional colour. Phoenix II is still considered a creative, experimental colour film and may render certain colours differently from more established films. Avoid severe underexposure. Giving the film enough light helps preserve better shadow information and colour. Keep your negatives. Different scanners and scanning settings can produce noticeably different colour and contrast, so negatives give you the option to rescan later. Tell your lab you are shooting Phoenix II. Scanning may benefit from adjustments to colour balance and contrast rather than relying entirely on automatic settings. Store unused film cool and dry. Keep it away from excessive heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Process using C-41. HARMAN Phoenix II is designed for standard colour negative development.
