Kodak Professional TRI-X 400 120 Black & White Film

Kodak Professional TRI-X 400 is a classic ISO 400 panchromatic black & white negative film known for its distinctive grain, strong tonal separation, excellent sharpness and unmistakable traditional monochrome character.

In 120 format, TRI-X 400 benefits from the larger medium-format negative, giving you excellent detail, smoother-looking grain and rich tonal depth while retaining the expressive look that has made TRI-X popular for generations. Its ISO 400 speed makes it highly versatile for daylight, overcast conditions, shade and many available-light situations.

TRI-X 400 is particularly well suited to portraits, street photography, documentary work, travel, weddings, architecture and fine-art photography. It also responds very well to push processing when additional speed is required.

It requires traditional black & white processing.

Questions about this product

Why Choose Kodak Professional TRI-X 400 120 Film?

Choose Kodak TRI-X 400 in 120 format when you want a medium-format black & white film with strong character, excellent versatility and a classic photographic look. Its ISO 400 speed gives you more flexibility than slower films when shooting handheld or working in changing light. At the same time, the larger 120 negative helps produce smoother tonal transitions and excellent detail. TRI-X is especially appealing to photographers who want visible grain and expressive contrast rather than an ultra-clean modern look. In medium format, the grain becomes more refined while the characteristic TRI-X style remains. Another major advantage is its push-processing performance, making it a strong choice for low-light work, events and night photography.

Shooting Tips for Kodak Professional TRI-X 400 120 Film

Start at ISO 400. Box speed provides a dependable balance of shadow detail, contrast and grain. Give the shadows enough exposure. Proper exposure helps retain useful detail in darker areas and gives you stronger negatives for scanning or printing. Try EI 800 for extra flexibility. A one-stop push can be useful when light levels fall or when you need faster shutter speeds. Push to EI 1600 when necessary. TRI-X responds well to extended development, though contrast and grain will increase. Higher speeds are possible. More aggressive pushing can be used for very low-light work, but shadow detail will decrease and grain and contrast will become more pronounced. Tell your lab when pushing. If you expose the film above ISO 400, clearly tell the lab the exposure index used so development can be adjusted correctly. Use dramatic light creatively. TRI-X works beautifully with strong highlights, deep shadows, silhouettes and directional light. Try window-light portraits. Soft side lighting can create rich mid-tones and expressive facial detail. Use coloured filters outdoors. Yellow, orange and red filters can darken blue skies and increase tonal separation. Remember to compensate for the filter factor. Focus carefully. The larger 120 negative records plenty of detail, so focusing errors are more noticeable, especially at wider apertures. Remember frame count depends on your camera. A 120 roll gives different numbers of photographs depending on whether your camera uses 6×4.5, 6×6, 6×7, 6×9 or another medium-format size. Scan at high resolution. TRI-X 400 in 120 format can produce excellent digital files while preserving its distinctive grain and monochrome character. Kodak Professional TRI-X 400 requires conventional black & white development.
