CineStill 400D 120 Colour Negative Film

CineStill 400D is a versatile ISO 400 daylight-balanced colour negative film designed for medium-format photographers who want a distinctive cinematic look combined with excellent exposure flexibility.

In 120 format, CineStill 400D benefits from the larger medium-format negative, producing fine grain, excellent detail, natural saturation and warm skin tones. Its daylight balance of approximately 5500K makes it particularly suitable for portraits, travel, street photography, weddings, landscapes and lifestyle photography.

The film has a wide exposure range and can be rated approximately from EI 200 to 800 with normal processing, while push processing can extend its use up to EI 3200 when additional sensitivity is required.

CineStill 400D is designed for standard C-41 colour negative processing, making it straightforward to develop at conventional colour film labs.

Questions about this product

Why Choose CineStill 400D 120 Film?

Choose CineStill 400D in 120 format when you want a highly versatile medium-format colour film with a distinctive cinematic appearance. Its ISO 400 speed is fast enough for everyday handheld photography while still providing fine grain and excellent detail. In medium format, the larger negative helps produce smoother tonal transitions and particularly detailed scans. Another major advantage is its wide exposure flexibility. You can rate the film around EI 200, 400 or 800 and still use standard C-41 processing, giving you freedom when lighting conditions change during a shoot. CineStill 400D is also known for its attractive warm skin tones and softer colour palette, making it especially appealing for portraits, weddings and lifestyle photography. For photographers who want something different from traditional Kodak or Fujifilm colour stocks, 400D offers a recognisable cinematic film character.

Shooting Tips for CineStill 400D 120 Film

Start at ISO 400. Box speed provides a dependable balance of colour, grain and exposure flexibility. Try EI 200 for a brighter look. Giving the film additional exposure can produce softer tones, strong shadow detail and attractive portrait results. Use EI 800 when you need more speed. CineStill 400D can be exposed at EI 800 and normally processed in standard C-41 without requiring a push. Push when light levels fall. If additional sensitivity is required, the film can be push-processed up to approximately EI 3200. Expect changes in grain, contrast and colour as the push increases. Tell your lab when push processing is required. If you deliberately shoot beyond the normal EI 200–800 range, specify the exposure index used. Avoid severe underexposure. Giving colour negative film sufficient light generally produces cleaner shadows and more attractive colour. Use halation creatively. Street lamps, neon signs, car headlights and bright windows may create glowing reddish highlights, adding to the film's cinematic character. Try it during golden hour. Warm sunlight can complement the film's natural skin-tone rendering and softer colour palette. Focus carefully. The larger 120 negative records excellent detail, so focusing errors can be noticeable, particularly with wide apertures. Remember frame count depends on your camera. One roll of 120 film produces different numbers of photographs depending on whether your camera shoots 6×4.5, 6×6, 6×7, 6×9 or another medium-format size. Scan at high resolution. CineStill 400D in 120 format can produce highly detailed digital files with attractive grain and colour. Process using C-41. CineStill 400D is specifically designed for standard colour negative processing.
