Question 1

Why Choose the Olympus µ[mju:]-V?

Accepted Answer

Choose the Olympus µ[mju:]-V if you want a higher-specification compact film camera with more versatility than a basic fixed-lens point-and-shoot.

The 38–105mm zoom lens covers a very useful range. At 38mm it works well for travel, street scenes, architecture and groups, while 105mm provides tighter framing for portraits and distant details.

The 11-point Multi-Wide autofocus system is another major advantage, helping the camera focus on subjects positioned across a wider area of the frame.

Its aluminium exterior gives the camera a more premium feel than many plastic compact cameras, while the all-weather construction provides extra protection against everyday exposure to poor weather. It should not, however, be treated as a waterproof or submersible camera.

Automatic exposure and film transport make it straightforward enough for beginners while Spot Metering, Backlight Compensation and multiple flash modes provide additional control for more experienced users.

Question 2

Which Film Does the Olympus µ[mju:]-V Take?

Accepted Answer

The Olympus µ[mju:]-V takes standard 35mm / 135 film.

For automatic film-speed setting, it supports DX-coded film at:

ISO 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200.

Intermediate DX speeds are automatically set to the next lower supported value, while non-DX film is treated as ISO 100.

For general everyday photography, ISO 400 film is an excellent all-round choice, providing useful flexibility for sunshine, cloudy conditions and shade.

ISO 100 or 200 films work particularly well in bright daylight, while ISO 800 can be useful in lower-light situations.

Suitable colour films include Kodak Gold 200, Kodak UltraMax 400, Kodak Portra 400 and Fujifilm 400.

For black & white photography, Ilford HP5 Plus 400, Kentmere Pan 400 and Kodak TRI-X 400 are practical choices.

Question 3

Performance

Accepted Answer

The Olympus 38–105mm f/5.6–11.3 zoom lens provides useful flexibility while keeping the camera compact.

Its optical design includes ED glass and aspherical elements, helping control chromatic and other optical aberrations across the zoom range.

At 38mm, the camera is well suited to travel, groups and environmental photographs. At 105mm, it provides tighter framing for portraits and details.

The Multi-Wide autofocus system can evaluate up to 11 points, making it easier to photograph subjects that are not directly centred.

Three-zone metering handles most everyday lighting automatically, while Spot Metering and Backlight Compensation provide extra control for difficult scenes.

In low light, the built-in flash can activate automatically, while Night Scene modes allow longer exposures of up to approximately four seconds to retain more background atmosphere.

Question 4

Shooting Tips

Accepted Answer

For general everyday use, start with DX-coded ISO 400 film.

Use the 38mm setting for groups, travel and wider scenes, and zoom towards 105mm for portraits and details.

Keep subjects at least approximately 0.8m away at the wide end and around 0.6m away at full telephoto.

Use Spot Metering when your main subject is much brighter or darker than the surrounding scene.

Try Backlight Compensation when photographing people against bright windows, skies or other strongly illuminated backgrounds.

Use the Night Scene flash modes for evening portraits where you want to retain more background light.

Hold the camera particularly steady when using Night Scene mode because exposure times can become several seconds long.

Use DX-coded film whenever possible so the camera can automatically determine the correct film speed.

Remember that non-DX film is treated as ISO 100.

Carry a spare CR2 battery when travelling, as the autofocus, zoom, flash and motorised film transport all depend on battery power.

Keep the sliding cover closed when carrying the camera to protect the lens.
