Question 1

Why Choose the Pentax PC-55?

Accepted Answer

The Pentax PC-55 is a good choice if you want a straightforward 35mm film camera without complicated manual exposure or focusing controls.

Its autofocus system handles focusing automatically, while the camera also manages exposure and film transport. This means you can concentrate mainly on composition and timing.

The 30mm wide-angle lens is particularly useful for holidays, groups, street scenes and everyday photography because it captures more of the surroundings than many traditional 35mm or 38mm compact-camera lenses.

Its large viewfinder also makes framing comfortable and straightforward, while the use of ordinary AA batteries makes replacement power easy to find when travelling.

For beginners wanting to experience 35mm photography with minimal setup, the PC-55 provides a simple point-and-shoot approach.

Question 2

Which Film Does the Pentax PC-55 Take?

Accepted Answer

The Pentax PC-55 takes standard 35mm / 135 film.

For automatic exposure, the camera uses DX-coded film and recognises ISO 100/200 and ISO 400 settings.

For general everyday photography, ISO 400 film is the most versatile choice. It provides greater flexibility in cloudy conditions, shade and changing light while still working well outdoors.

ISO 100 or ISO 200 film is well suited to brighter daylight conditions.

For colour photography, suitable choices include Kodak Gold 200, Kodak ColorPlus 200, Kodak UltraMax 400 and Fujifilm 400.

For black & white photography, Ilford HP5 Plus 400, Kentmere Pan 400 or Kodak TRI-X 400 are practical options.

For the most predictable automatic exposure, use a DX-coded 35mm film within the camera's supported film-speed range.

Question 3

Performance

Accepted Answer

The Pentax 30mm f/4.5 lens gives the PC-55 a moderately wide perspective that works particularly well for travel, groups, landscapes and everyday street photography.

Its active autofocus system operates from approximately 1.3 metres to infinity, making it suitable for most normal snapshot distances. The camera also provides focus lock when you want to position your main subject away from the centre of the frame.

The fixed 1/125-second shutter keeps operation simple and is well suited to general handheld daylight photography.

When available light is insufficient, the built-in flash activates automatically. Red-eye reduction helps when photographing people with flash at closer distances.

Motorised film advance and rewind further simplify operation, making the PC-55 particularly convenient for casual film photography.

Question 4

Shooting Tips

Accepted Answer

For the easiest everyday setup, use DX-coded ISO 400 film. It provides useful flexibility across sunshine, cloudy weather and shade.

Keep subjects at least around 1.3 metres away, as the autofocus system is not designed for very close photography.

Use focus lock when your subject is positioned away from the centre of the frame: focus first, keep the shutter button partially pressed, recompose and then take the photograph.

Allow the built-in flash to recharge fully before taking another flash photograph.

Because the lens is relatively wide at 30mm, move closer when you want your subject to fill more of the frame.

Use the wide field of view creatively for travel scenes, architecture, groups and environmental photographs.

Carry spare AA batteries when travelling, as the autofocus, flash and motorised film transport depend on battery power.

Wait until the automatic rewind has finished completely before opening the camera back.
