Question 1

Why Choose the Canon Sure Shot AF-7?

Accepted Answer

Choose the Canon Sure Shot AF-7 if you want a straightforward 35mm film camera without the learning curve of a manual SLR.

The autofocus system automatically selects the appropriate focusing distance, while programmed exposure takes care of shutter speed and aperture. This means you can concentrate on framing the photograph and capturing the moment.

The fixed 35mm f/4.5 lens provides a very useful field of view for general photography. It is wide enough for travel, street scenes and groups while remaining natural enough for people and everyday snapshots.

Another major advantage is the camera's automatic film handling. Once the film is loaded correctly, the camera advances it automatically after each photograph and rewinds the roll when finished.

The use of two standard AA batteries also makes the AF-7 practical for travelling, as replacement batteries are widely available.

Question 2

Which Film Does the Canon Sure Shot AF-7 Take?

Accepted Answer

The Canon Sure Shot AF-7 takes standard 35mm / 135 film.

It is designed to recognise DX-coded films at:

ISO 100

ISO 200

ISO 400

For most everyday photography, ISO 400 film is the most versatile choice because it performs well in daylight, cloudy weather, shade and changing conditions.

For bright sunny conditions, ISO 100 or ISO 200 film can provide excellent results with finer grain.

The camera can be used with both colour negative and black & white 35mm film.

Suitable colour films include Kodak Gold 200, Kodak ColorPlus 200, Kodak UltraMax 400 and Fujifilm 400.

For black & white photography, films such as Ilford HP5 Plus 400, Kentmere Pan 400 and Kodak TRI-X 400 are excellent choices.

For the most predictable automatic exposure, use a DX-coded film within the camera's supported ISO range.

Question 3

Performance

Accepted Answer

The Canon 35mm f/4.5 lens provides a versatile moderately wide perspective suitable for a broad range of everyday photography.

Its three-step active autofocus system uses a near-infrared beam and focuses from approximately 0.8 metres to infinity, making it suitable for portraits, groups, street scenes, landscapes and general snapshots.

Exposure is handled automatically through a programmed shutter and aperture system. Depending on available light, the camera selects one of several shutter and aperture combinations automatically.

In darker conditions, the built-in flash automatically fires to provide additional illumination. The flash can also be deliberately switched on when you want fill light or switched off when flash photography is not permitted.

Automatic film loading, motorised advance and automatic rewind make the AF-7 especially easy to operate compared with older manual film cameras.

Question 4

Shooting Tips

Accepted Answer

Use ISO 400 film for general photography. It provides the greatest flexibility across sunshine, cloud and shade.

Choose ISO 100 or 200 for bright daylight. Slower films can produce finer grain when plenty of light is available.

Use DX-coded film. The AF-7 automatically recognises supported DX film speeds, making exposure setup simple.

Keep your subject at least around 0.8 metres away. The autofocus system is not intended for very close macro photography.

Use the built-in flash indoors. Even when a room appears bright to your eyes, there may not be enough light for reliable handheld film photography.

Use flash for backlit portraits. Switching the flash on can help brighten faces when the background is much brighter.

Switch the flash off when required. This is useful in museums, theatres or situations where flash photography is not permitted.

Hold the camera steady. A stable grip will help maximise sharpness, particularly when available light is limited.

Use the 35mm lens creatively. Move closer to your subject for stronger compositions rather than expecting a zoom function.

Watch the edges of the frame. The relatively wide lens can include more background than expected.

Let the camera advance the film automatically. There is no need to manually wind between photographs.

Wait for rewind to finish. At the end of the roll, allow the motor to fully rewind the film before opening the camera back.

Carry spare AA batteries. The autofocus, flash and motorised film transport all rely on battery power.

Keep the lens clean. Dust and fingerprints can reduce image clarity and contrast.
