Question 1

Why Choose the Olympus XA1 with A9M Flash?

Accepted Answer

Choose the Olympus XA1 if you want an uncomplicated 35mm film camera that removes most of the technical decisions associated with traditional photography.

Its fixed-focus lens means there is no focusing adjustment to make for normal subjects beyond approximately 1.5 metres. The selenium exposure system automatically controls the shutter speed and aperture, so the photographer can concentrate mainly on composition and timing.

Another major advantage is that the camera itself requires no battery. The selenium cell responds directly to available light and powers the exposure system mechanically, making the XA1 particularly appealing as a simple travel or everyday camera.

The included A9M flash extends its usefulness into darker environments. When available light is insufficient, the XA1 displays a red warning and prevents the shutter from firing, indicating that flash should be used.

The compact sliding-cover design also protects the lens when the camera is carried in a pocket or bag.

Question 2

Which Film Does the Olympus XA1 Take?

Accepted Answer

The Olympus XA1 takes standard 35mm / 135 film.

The camera provides two film-speed settings:

ISO 100

and

ISO 400

For general everyday photography, ISO 400 film is the most versatile choice. It provides greater flexibility in cloudy weather, shade and changing light while still working well in daylight.

ISO 100 film is best suited to bright outdoor conditions where plenty of natural light is available.

You can use both colour negative and black & white 35mm film.

Suitable colour films include ISO 100 and ISO 400 options such as Kodak Ektar 100, Kodak UltraMax 400 and Fujifilm 400.

For black & white photography, Ilford HP5 Plus 400, Kentmere Pan 400 and Kodak TRI-X 400 are particularly practical choices.

Always set the film-speed selector to 100 or 400 to match the film loaded in the camera.

Question 3

Performance

Accepted Answer

The Olympus D.Zuiko 35mm f/4 lens provides a versatile moderately wide field of view that works particularly well for street scenes, travel, groups, landscapes and everyday snapshots.

The XA1 is designed around simplicity rather than manual photographic control. Its selenium-cell meter automatically selects an exposure between approximately f/4 at 1/30 second and f/22 at 1/250 second, depending on available light.

The fixed-focus design covers subjects from approximately 1.5 metres to infinity, making the camera particularly quick for outdoor snapshots and spontaneous photography.

In low light, the camera's red warning indicator appears and the shutter is prevented from firing when the automatic exposure system cannot provide an adequate exposure. In these situations, the A9M flash provides the necessary additional light.

The A9M is a manual flash, so subject distance is important. With ISO 100 film, the camera indicates a flash distance of approximately 2.3 metres, while ISO 400 extends this to approximately 4.5 metres.
