Ilford DELTA 3200 Professional 35mm Black & White Film

Ilford DELTA 3200 Professional is an ultra-high-speed panchromatic black & white negative film designed for photography in very low light and difficult available-light conditions. Although its measured ISO speed is ISO 1000, the film is specifically designed to be exposed at EI 3200 with extended development, giving photographers exceptional flexibility when conventional ISO 400 films are not fast enough.

DELTA 3200 produces a distinctive monochrome look with prominent yet controlled grain, strong detail and a broad tonal range. Its high effective speed makes it particularly suitable for concerts, night photography, indoor events, street photography, sport and documentary work where flash may be unavailable or undesirable.

It is processed using traditional black & white chemistry, with development adjusted to match the exposure index used.

Questions about this product

Why Choose Ilford DELTA 3200?

Choose Ilford DELTA 3200 Professional when you need to photograph in conditions where slower films would force impractically long shutter speeds or very wide apertures. Its main advantage is speed. Shooting at EI 3200 gives you approximately three stops more sensitivity than ISO 400 film, helping you maintain faster shutter speeds in dim interiors, at concerts, during evening street photography or when photographing moving subjects. DELTA 3200 also has a distinctive aesthetic. Its visible grain, deep monochrome tones and available-light character can give photographs an atmospheric, documentary-style appearance that is difficult to reproduce with slower, finer-grained films. It is especially useful for photographers who prefer working with existing light rather than flash.

Best Use For

Concerts & Live Music: Excellent when stage lighting is limited and flash photography is restricted. Night Street Photography: Ideal for city streets, illuminated shop fronts, transport and late-night documentary work. Indoor Available Light: Useful in cafés, theatres, museums, churches and other darker interiors. Documentary Photography: Its high speed allows photographers to respond quickly without controlling the lighting. Events & Weddings: Particularly useful for evening receptions, indoor venues and candid photography. Sport & Action: The extra sensitivity can help achieve faster shutter speeds in poor lighting. Portrait Photography: Atmospheric portraits can be created using window light, lamps or other low-level illumination. Creative Black & White Photography: Pronounced grain and strong tonal character make it excellent for deliberately gritty or cinematic images.

Shooting Tips for Ilford DELTA 3200

Start at EI 3200. This is the exposure setting the film is primarily designed around and is the most straightforward choice for low-light photography. Tell your lab how you exposed the film. DELTA 3200 requires different development depending on whether it was shot at EI 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 or higher. EI 1600 can give smoother results. Giving the film an extra stop of exposure can provide better shadow detail and somewhat more controlled grain. EI 6400 is useful when light is extremely limited. Expect increased grain, contrast and reduced shadow detail, but the additional speed can make otherwise impossible photographs achievable. Higher speeds are possible. DELTA 3200 can be exposed beyond EI 6400 with suitable extended development, but results become increasingly specialised and test shooting is recommended. Do not confuse EI 3200 with its measured ISO speed. The film has an ISO rating of 1000 but is engineered to perform particularly well when exposed and developed for EI 3200. Use a fast lens where possible. Lenses around f/1.4, f/1.8 or f/2 can make the most of the film’s high-speed capability. Watch your highlights. Stage lights, lamps and bright signs can create very high contrast, so meter for the important subject rather than the brightest light source. Expect grain. Grain is part of DELTA 3200’s character and becomes more pronounced as the film is pushed to higher exposure indexes. Choose the right developer. Ilford recommends developers such as ILFOTEC DD-X, MICROPHEN and ID-11, with development time matched to the chosen EI. Scan at good resolution. High-quality scanning helps preserve both fine detail and the film’s distinctive grain structure. Do not process as C-41. DELTA 3200 requires conventional black & white processing.
