Ilford DELTA 400 Professional 35mm Black & White Film
Ilford DELTA 400 Professional is a high-speed ISO 400 panchromatic black & white negative film designed for photographers who want fine grain, excellent sharpness and a clean, detailed monochrome image.
Using Ilford’s advanced DELTA emulsion technology, it delivers particularly fine grain for an ISO 400 film while retaining strong detail and a wide tonal range. This makes it an excellent choice when you need the versatility of ISO 400 but still want photographs suitable for high-quality scanning, enlargements and fine-art printing.
DELTA 400 performs particularly well for portraits, street photography, documentary work, architecture, action and available-light photography. Although rated at ISO 400, it can produce good results across approximately EI 200–3200 when exposure and development are adjusted appropriately.
It requires conventional black & white film processing rather than C-41 development.

Questions about this product
Why Choose Ilford DELTA 400 Professional?
Choose Ilford DELTA 400 Professional when you want the versatility of an ISO 400 black & white film but prefer a finer-grained, sharper and more refined appearance. Its combination of speed and image quality makes it particularly useful for photographers who need to work handheld without sacrificing too much detail. It performs comfortably outdoors, in cloudy conditions, in open shade and in many available-light environments. One of DELTA 400’s strongest advantages is its ability to produce high levels of detail with comparatively restrained grain. This makes it especially suitable for photographers who plan to make larger prints or high-resolution scans. It is also highly flexible. You can expose it at different exposure indexes and adjust development accordingly, allowing one film to cover everything from bright daylight to much more demanding low-light situations.
Best Use For
Portrait Photography: Fine grain and smooth tonal transitions make DELTA 400 excellent for detailed black & white portraits. Street Photography: ISO 400 gives enough speed for changing daylight, shaded streets and fast-moving subjects. Documentary Photography: Excellent sharpness and tonal range make it suitable for reportage and storytelling. Architecture: Fine detail and clean tonal separation work particularly well with buildings, textures, patterns and geometric shapes. Fine Art Photography: Its refined grain structure and high detail make it ideal for carefully composed monochrome work. Available-Light Photography: ISO 400 provides useful flexibility when photographing indoors or in weaker natural light. Action Photography: The additional speed allows faster shutter speeds compared with ISO 100 or 200 films. Travel Photography: A useful all-round black & white film when you expect to encounter a variety of lighting conditions.
Shooting Tips for Ilford DELTA 400
Start at ISO 400. Box speed provides an excellent balance of detail, tonal range and fine grain. Give the shadows enough exposure. Accurate exposure helps maintain detail in darker areas and produces easier-to-print or scan negatives. Try EI 200 for generous exposure. Rating the film slightly slower can provide additional shadow detail, provided development is adjusted appropriately if necessary. Push to EI 800 or 1600 when needed. DELTA 400 responds well to extended development and is useful when extra shutter speed is required. Tell your film lab your shooting ISO. If you expose the film above or below ISO 400, clearly tell the lab so they can select the appropriate development. Use it when detail matters. Architecture, portraits, textures and landscapes benefit particularly from DELTA 400’s sharpness and fine grain. Try yellow, orange or red filters outdoors. Filters can increase separation between clouds and blue skies and create more dramatic black & white landscapes. Remember to compensate for the filter factor. Use high-resolution scanning. Its fine grain and excellent sharpness make DELTA 400 particularly rewarding when scanned at higher resolutions. Do not process as C-41. This is a traditional black & white film and requires standard black & white development.
