Ilford HP5 Plus 400 35mm Black & White Film

Ilford HP5 Plus 400 is a classic ISO 400 panchromatic black & white negative film known for its excellent exposure latitude, dependable performance and distinctive traditional grain structure. It is one of the most versatile black & white films available, making it suitable for everything from everyday photography and street shooting to portraits, documentary work and lower-light situations.

Its ISO 400 speed provides a useful balance between sensitivity, sharpness and grain, while the film’s broad exposure latitude makes it forgiving when lighting conditions change. HP5 Plus also responds particularly well to push processing, allowing photographers to rate it at higher exposure indexes when extra speed is required.

It is processed using standard black & white film chemistry and is an excellent choice for both beginners learning film photography and experienced photographers who want a flexible, characterful monochrome film.

Questions about this product

Why Choose Ilford HP5 Plus 400?

Choose Ilford HP5 Plus 400 when you want one black & white film that can handle a wide variety of photographic situations. Its ISO 400 speed makes it fast enough for general handheld photography while still providing good sharpness and plenty of detail. Compared with slower black & white films, HP5 Plus gives you greater freedom when shooting in shade, cloudy weather, interiors or late in the day. One of its biggest advantages is its wide exposure latitude. This makes it more forgiving when exposure is slightly off and gives photographers more flexibility in difficult or rapidly changing lighting. HP5 Plus is also highly popular because of its ability to be pushed to higher speeds. This allows you to use it in darker environments while producing a more contrasty, grainier look that many photographers deliberately seek.

Best Use For

Street Photography: Excellent for candid photography, changing light and fast-moving urban situations. Documentary Photography: Its flexibility, grain and tonal character make it ideal for storytelling and reportage. Portrait Photography: Produces attractive monochrome portraits with good tonal separation and character. Low-Light Photography: ISO 400 is already relatively fast, and push processing makes it even more useful when light levels fall. Travel Photography: A dependable film when you want to photograph different subjects and lighting conditions on the same roll. Architecture: Good sharpness and tonal range work well for buildings, textures, shadows and graphic compositions. Concerts & Events: Push processing to EI 800, 1600 or 3200 can make HP5 Plus useful where available light is limited. Fine Art Photography: Its traditional grain and flexible development options make it an excellent film for creative darkroom and scanning workflows.

Shooting Tips for Ilford HP5 Plus 400

Start at ISO 400. This gives a good balance of shadow detail, tonal range and grain. Take advantage of its latitude. HP5 Plus is forgiving, making it a strong choice when lighting changes quickly. Try rating it at EI 800. A one-stop push can give extra shutter speed with only a moderate increase in contrast and grain. Push to EI 1600 or 3200 when needed. This is useful for concerts, night photography and dim interiors, but expect noticeably more grain and contrast. Meter for important shadow detail. Giving the film sufficient exposure helps retain information in darker areas. Use it for strong light and shadow. HP5 Plus works especially well with dramatic lighting, making it ideal for street and architectural photography. Try coloured filters. Yellow, orange or red filters can darken blue skies and increase tonal separation in landscapes and architecture. Remember to compensate for the light lost through the filter. Scan at high resolution. Good scans preserve HP5 Plus’s characteristic grain, tonal range and fine detail. Process as black & white film. HP5 Plus is not a C-41 film and requires conventional black & white development.
