Kodak Eastman Professional TRI-X 400 35mm Black & White Film
Kodak Eastman Professional TRI-X 400 is a classic ISO 400 panchromatic black & white negative film known for its distinctive grain structure, excellent sharpness, strong tonal separation and unmistakable traditional monochrome character.
Its ISO 400 sensitivity makes it highly versatile for street photography, documentary work, portraits, travel, events and available-light photography. TRI-X 400 handles changing lighting conditions well and offers generous exposure flexibility, making it equally useful for spontaneous shooting and carefully planned photographic projects.
One of the film’s greatest strengths is its ability to respond well to push processing, allowing photographers to work at higher exposure indexes when additional speed is required. This makes it particularly popular for concerts, night photography, indoor documentary work and other challenging lighting situations.
Kodak Eastman Professional TRI-X 400 requires traditional black & white processing rather than C-41 development.

Questions about this product
Why Choose Kodak Eastman Professional TRI-X 400?
Choose Kodak Eastman Professional TRI-X 400 if you want a black & white film with strong character, excellent versatility and one of the most recognisable traditional film looks. TRI-X is not designed to hide its grain. Instead, the grain becomes part of the photograph, helping create an expressive, authentic monochrome appearance that works beautifully for people, streets, architecture and documentary subjects. Its ISO 400 speed is also extremely practical. It provides more flexibility than slower ISO 100 or 125 films while still delivering excellent detail. Another major reason to choose TRI-X is its excellent push-processing performance. When lighting conditions become difficult, it can be exposed at higher effective speeds and developed accordingly, making it a strong choice for photographers who prefer available light over flash.
Shooting Tips for Kodak Eastman Professional TRI-X 400
Start at ISO 400. Box speed provides a strong balance of shadow detail, contrast and grain. Expose carefully for the shadows. Giving important darker areas enough exposure helps maintain detail and produces stronger negatives for printing or scanning. Try EI 800 for extra flexibility. A one-stop push is useful when light levels begin to fall or when you need a faster shutter speed. Push to EI 1600 for low light. This is a popular approach for concerts, events and night photography. Expect more contrast and a stronger grain structure. Higher exposure indexes are possible. TRI-X can be pushed further when necessary, but shadow detail will decrease and grain and contrast will become more pronounced. Tell your film lab when pushing. If you shoot the film at a higher exposure index, clearly tell the lab so development can be adjusted correctly. Use dramatic lighting. TRI-X responds especially well to strong highlights, deep shadows, silhouettes and directional light. Try it for window-light portraits. Soft natural light can create rich mid-tones and expressive skin texture. Use coloured filters creatively. Yellow, orange and red filters can darken blue skies and increase tonal separation in landscapes and architecture. Exposure compensation will be required. Experiment with development. Different traditional black & white developers can influence grain, sharpness and contrast, allowing photographers to tailor the appearance of TRI-X. Scan at high resolution. Good scanning preserves both image detail and the distinctive grain structure that gives TRI-X its character. Kodak Eastman Professional TRI-X 400 requires conventional black & white development.
