Kodak Professional TRI-X 400 35mm Black & White Film

Kodak Professional TRI-X 400 is a legendary ISO 400 panchromatic black & white negative film known for its distinctive grain, excellent sharpness, strong tonal separation and classic documentary-style character.

Its ISO 400 speed makes it highly versatile for street photography, portraits, documentary work, travel, events and available-light photography. TRI-X 400 produces rich blacks, bright highlights and a recognisable traditional grain structure that gives photographs a strong analogue look without sacrificing useful detail.

One of its greatest strengths is flexibility. It performs reliably at its rated ISO 400 and also responds very well to push processing when additional speed is needed for darker environments or faster shutter speeds.

Kodak TRI-X 400 requires traditional black & white processing rather than C-41 development.

Questions about this product

Why Choose Kodak Professional TRI-X 400?

Choose Kodak TRI-X 400 when you want a black & white film with unmistakable character, excellent flexibility and a long-established reputation for documentary and street photography. Unlike extremely fine-grained modern films, TRI-X embraces its grain structure as part of the image. The result is a strong, expressive monochrome look that works particularly well with people, architecture, urban environments and dramatic lighting. Its ISO 400 speed also makes it extremely practical. You can comfortably shoot in daylight, overcast weather, shade and many available-light situations without constantly changing film. Another major advantage is its push-processing capability. TRI-X is widely used at higher exposure indexes when photographers need extra sensitivity, making it a favourite for concerts, evening street photography and dimly lit documentary work.

Shooting Tips for Kodak TRI-X 400

Start at ISO 400. Shooting at box speed gives a dependable balance of shadow detail, contrast and grain. Give the shadows enough exposure. Proper exposure helps retain useful detail in darker areas and produces easier-to-print or scan negatives. Try EI 800 when you need more speed. TRI-X responds well to moderate push processing, giving you an extra stop for lower-light situations. Push to EI 1600 when necessary. This is popular for concerts, events and night photography. Expect increased contrast and grain. Higher push speeds are possible. TRI-X can be pushed further with suitable processing, but grain, contrast and loss of shadow detail will become more pronounced. Tell your lab when pushing. If you expose the film above ISO 400, make sure your lab knows the exposure index so development can be adjusted correctly. Use strong light and shadow creatively. TRI-X works beautifully with dramatic lighting, silhouettes and high-contrast street scenes. Try coloured filters. Yellow, orange and red filters can darken blue skies and increase tonal separation in landscapes and architecture. Remember to compensate for the light lost through the filter. Experiment with different developers. Developer choice can influence grain, contrast and sharpness, allowing you to tailor TRI-X to your preferred look. Scan at high resolution. Good scanning preserves both fine detail and the characteristic grain structure that gives TRI-X its distinctive appearance. Kodak TRI-X 400 requires conventional black & white development.
